Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP)

A Gentle, Nervous System-Informed Approach to Supporting Regulation, Connection & Well-Being

If you or your child are experiencing anxiety, overwhelm, emotional dysregulation, sensory sensitivities, or the lasting effects of chronic stress or trauma, the Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP) may offer a supportive pathway toward feeling safer, calmer, and more connected.

The Safe & Sound Protocol is a research-informed therapeutic listening program designed to support nervous system regulation through specially filtered music. Delivered with practitioner guidance, SSP can help create a stronger foundation for emotional resilience, social engagement, and therapeutic progress.

What Is the Safe & Sound Protocol?

The Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP) is an evidence-based listening therapy developed from Dr. Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory.

Using specially filtered music, SSP gently supports the auditory system and nervous system by helping the brain and body recognise cues of safety more effectively.

In simple terms:

SSP is designed to help your nervous system shift out of patterns of chronic stress, hypervigilance, shutdown, or overwhelm — supporting your capacity to feel more regulated, present, and connected.

SSP may support:

  • Anxiety and chronic stress

  • Emotional dysregulation

  • Trauma and PTSD symptoms

  • Sensory sensitivities

  • Social engagement challenges

  • Chronic pain support

Emerging evidence also suggests SSP may benefit some individuals experiencing:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

  • ADHD

How Does SSP Work?

When the nervous system has been shaped by chronic stress, trauma, or heightened sensitivity, the body may struggle to consistently feel safe — even in everyday situations.

The Safe & Sound Protocol uses specially filtered music that exercises the neural pathways involved in:

    ✔ Auditory processing

    ✔ Nervous system regulation

    ✔ Social engagement

By gently supporting these systems, SSP may help improve:

  • Emotional regulation

  • Sense of safety

  • Focus and attention

  • Social connection

  • Resilience to stress

  • Capacity to engage more effectively in therapy, coaching, or daily life

Important to Know

SSP is not a cure or standalone fix.

It is best understood as a supportive therapeutic tool that may help regulate the nervous system and enhance broader healing work.

For best results:

✔ Guided by a trained practitioner
✔ Personalised to your needs
✔ Integrated thoughtfully with existing supports
✔ Adjusted based on your pace and nervous system response

Benefits of Working with an SSP Provider

Choosing a trained SSP provider means your experience is:

Safer

More personalised

Better paced

More responsive to your needs

A practitioner can help monitor:

  • Overwhelm

  • Fatigue

  • Emotional shifts

  • Pacing adjustments

This is especially important for trauma-informed or sensory-sensitive individuals.
